K. Gordon Neufeld lives with his wife, Mary Jo Downey, and step-daughter, Eiry, in up-state New York. Mr. Neufeld is the author of Heartbreak and Rage: Ten Years under Sun Myung Moon, A Cult Survivor's Memoir (College Station, TX: Virtualbookworm.com, 2002).As well, he is the author of many short stories, some of which have appeared in literary journals such as The Windsor Review and The Nashwaak Review. Mr. Neufeld received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia in 1997. Originally from Calgary, Canada, Mr. Neufeld joined the Unification Church of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon in 1976 while travelling through California. He remained a member of that group for ten years. After leaving the group, he returned to Canada and resumed his education, and returned to his original ambition to be a writer. As a result of publication of his memoir, in 2005 he began communicating with Mary Jo Downey, another former member of the Unification Church, who was researching cult narratives. The two were married in Concord, Massachusetts in 2009.
